A New Classroom for the Tekazamt School near Agadez

In the north-eastern outskirts of Agadez, Niger, the Tekazamt public primary school plays an important role for children from the Agoulgoul neighborhood and surrounding areas. The school currently welcomes more than 850 pupils, including nearly 400 girls.
For many years, some pupils attended classes in straw shelters. These temporary structures, common in the region, expose children to heat, dust and rain, and can pose safety risks.
To improve learning conditions, the association Les Puits du Désert, in partnership with the Nigerien NGO Tidène and with the support of the Denibam Fund, financed the construction of a permanent classroom built with durable materials.
The works were carried out in 2025 by a local contractor selected through a tender process. The new classroom was equipped with complete school furniture, including desks and benches for the students, a teacher’s desk and storage cabinets.
Since the beginning of the school year in November 2025, the classroom has been used by around 70 pupils. It now offers a learning environment better adapted to the Sahelian climate, with improved ventilation and a safer setting.
Teachers report improved working conditions and better concentration among the pupils. Parents have also expressed greater confidence and are increasingly encouraging their children to attend school.
This project is part of the long-term work carried out by Les Puits du Désert for more than twenty years in the Agadez region to support access to water, education, health and local development, in close partnership with the NGO Tidène.
We are currently seeking additional funding to build two more classrooms for the school. Your support can help make this possible.
